Did you know...

Did you know...
  • ONE in EIGHT women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • The greatest risk factors for breast cancer are being FEMALE and GETTING OLDER.
To put this in perspective, I am one of 9 granddaughters on the Brock side of the family. That means that the odds are very good that me or one of my cousins will have breast cancer in our lifetime. For me, this is a very scary thought! Plus, let's face it, none of us are getting any younger.

One more reason...

Well, I have one more reason to participate in the 3-Day. My new baby niece, Cora. I will probably miss her first birthday party next year. But I figure helping to find a cure for breast cancer before she is old enough to know what it is would be the best birthday gift ever!

The Beginning of my Journey!

As many of you know, my mom died in 2000 after a three and a half year battle with breast cancer. She was 45 years young. From the time she was diagnosed I started thinking that I needed to be more involved in finding a cure for this awful disease. However, nine years later I was just sitting here thinking about it. A couple weeks ago my cousin, Mandy, asked me to participate in Race for the Cure. This was the perfect opportunity for me to get involved! In four short days Vivian and I raised $500 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. On October 10, 2009, we walked in the rain with over 13,000 other participants. We had a great time! Plus, I felt fantastic for finally doing something for my mom. I know she would have been extremely proud!

Participating in Race for the Cure made me realize how much I could support this cause with just a little effort (ok, maybe a lot of effort…keep reading). So this is where my new adventure begins. Mandy and I have decided to participate in the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in Atlanta. Our aunt, Cindy, and her friend, Molly, will join us. We are hoping that Heather (if she can get over the camping part) and Anna will join us too. We will walk 60 miles over a three-day period to raise awareness. Also, we are each responsible for raising $2,300 to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. We will walk in memory of my mom and in celebration of our aunt Debbie (who was diagnosed around the same time as my mom).

I am so excited! I look at this as a way to do something for my mom, myself, my daughter and all other women!

If you are interested in joining us, please email me at lori@the3wrights.com. More people participating means more money, which gets us one step closer to finding a CURE.

Oh, and before I go, let me address the most common questions/comments.
  • Yes, we realize 60 miles is a LONG way.
  • Yes, we might be crazy! But it is good crazy and for a great cause.
  • Yes, we REALLY think we can do it. For those of you that don’t just sit back and watch!
