Happy Valentine's Day to Me!

I ran in Macy's at lunch today and saw something I couldn't resist.  I LOVE martini glasses, especially the cute hand-painted ones by Lolita.  Well today I saw a pink ribbon martini glass.  I thought it would be a great addition to the ones I already have.  And of course, a portion of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  So it was a win-win situation!  There is also a recipe for a pink ribbon martini on the bottom:  2 ounces vodka, 3 ounces pink lemonade and 1 ounce triple sec.  Sounds yummy!

Half Way There!!!!!

I received an email from Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure telling me that I am half way to my minimum fundraising goal!  I am so amazed by the generosity of my friends, family, co-workers and strangers!  Thanks to all who have donated so far.  Your donation will make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

The following information was also in the email I received.  For those of you who haven't donated yet, please keep this information in mind.

Did you know that virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer has been touched by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®? That we've helped train more than 400 breast cancer researchers and funded more than 1,800 research projects over the past 27 years? That we've provided more money for breast cancer research and community health programs than any entity besides the U.S. government? Komen for the Cure's goal is to "energize science to find the cures.” We are proud of our contribution to some real victories:
  • More early detection - nearly 75 percent of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms, the single most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early (in 1982, less than 30 percent received a clinical exam).
  • More hope - the five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982).
  • More research - the federal government now devotes more than $900 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $30 million in 1982).
  • More survivors - America’s 2.5 million breast cancers survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S., are a living testament to the power of society and science to save lives.

Why I'm Walking

I am walking because...

  • 480 people a day are diagnosed with breast cancer!
  • 111 people a day die from breast cancer!
  • Compared to that, walking 20 miles a day is NOTHING!

A great day!!!

What a great day..I received another donation!  I also walked 4 miles at Heritage Park and then spent time playing with Vivian.  It was a beautiful day to be outside and any day with Vivian is fun.

I have added two list to the right showing the people I am walking in memory or celebration of.  If you would like for me to walk in memory/celebration of your loved one, please let me know.  I would be honored to add them to the list.

So much bigger...

I sent fundraising emails out last Friday night and had received $740 in donations by Tuesday (from only 8 donors!!). I have been amazed by the generosity people have shown. I was sitting at work Wednesday when I got an email on my Blackberry. The subject said "A donation was made on your behalf." You can imagine that this is my favorite email to receive! I opened the email to see who had donated. It was a woman whose name I had never heard before and she donated $100. To me that is a huge donation...especially from a stranger. So I logged in to the website to send her a thank you and saw the message she had sent. It said that she had a cousin that is battling breast cancer and another cousin who died from it last Friday at the age of 47. Then she wrote life is too short...thank you so much for doing this. My eyes started filling with tears as I realized that this is so much bigger that I had thought. I'm not just doing this for my mom or myself or Vivian. I am doing this to make the world a better place for ALL WOMEN!

If you haven't donated, please do so by clicking the picture below.  If you cannot make a monetary donation, please help by spreading the word.

Help me reach my goal for the Susan G. Komen Atlanta 3-Day for the Cure!

Training Day 1

It wasn't easy getting out of bed at 5 a.m. but it was worth it.  I got a great walk in and felt wonderful afterward! Plus, I got to see an amazing sunrise on my way back from the gym that I would have completely missed if I had slept in.  It is things like this that make me so thankful for all the blessings of life!

Training starts in the morning!

Well, I have my official training schedule all mapped out.  I will be starting in the morning.  I plan to walk on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and cross-train on Tuesday and Thursday.  And while I am very excited about the 3-Day, I have been a little slow getting started on the training.  I'm not looking forward to hitting the gym in the morning when it is 15 degrees outside but I keep telling myself that it is better than chemo!!!  So I plan to suck it up in the morning and be glad that I am healthy enough to be at the gym.

I got another donation yesterday and I have had numerous people telling me they will donate.  I truly appreciate everyone's support!
